Liverpool 2023 Eurovision campaign wrap-up

The 2023 Eurovision finals are this Saturday, and with it being hosted in Liverpool, we wanted to discuss a round up of all the weird, shiny and wonderful campaigns that have gone live surrounding the competition.

BBC:

BBC Creative – the broadcaster’s in-house creative agency – has worked with production company Outsiders on their Eurovision spot. The idea is to celebrate all the creative, quirky and occasionally extreme ways people prepare for Eurovision each year. In the ad, these include flag-themed nail art, buffets with literal trolleys full of cheese and fan-made costumes.

BBC Creative also pays homage to Ukrainian culture through the campaign, with the UK hosting this year’s Song Contest on behalf of the 2022 winners.

Kate Phillips, BBC Director of Unscripted, says: “It's an honour for the BBC to host the show on behalf of Ukraine, and we're committed to do them proud. The level of collaboration and coordination across so much of the output is truly amazing. Let the Eurovision Song Contest begin!”

TikTok and Sam Ryder:

TikTok is encouraging Europe's talented artists to take the stage on TikTok and celebrate Europe's biggest musical event. As Official Entertainment Partner of the Eurovision Song Contest, TikTok is today launching 'where stars get started', an advertising campaign for Eurovision starringSam Ryder, who has also been announced as TikTok's official Eurovision ambassador.

On billboards across Liverpool, the campaign shines a light on how stars get started, like TikTok superstar Sam Ryder who represented the UK last year and came second overall (having won the Judges’ vote) to Ukraine with 'SPACE MAN' .

The 30-second creative on the other hand is running on  VOD services, digital media and out-of-home locations through 1-14 May, as well as in-app on TikTok.

Alastair Boyle, Marketing Lead Europe TikTok said: "TikTok is where stars get started - and that's true whether you are a wedding singer who become a global superstar like Sam Ryder, or a small business like @TheBagelry who use TikTok to connect with customers across the country. With this campaign, we want to inspire creativity and invite audiences across the globe to join the celebrations on TikTok.

"Eurovision is such a special event in the hearts of the TikTok community and we're proud to be working with Sam as our Eurovision ambassador alongside local small businesses, to bring the magic of Eurovision and this vibrant city to life for our global community."

Foxy Bingo:

Gambling website Foxy Bingo is celebrating this year’s Eurovision Song Contest with a series of comic online films that poke fun at what the competition is best known for – utter chaos. With nods to classic Eurovision tropes of the past such as Scandinavian metal, Eastern European Disco Aliens, and Folk Singing Grannies, the three films are a continuation of the ‘Boomfox’ creative platform..

Booking.com:

As the Official Travel Partner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, Booking.com are  opening the doors to an incredible home “that is every bit as flamboyant as the contest itself bringing together the best of music, culture and diversity from the world’s biggest live music event - giving us the best travel inspiration ever.”

Liverpool:

Host city Liverpool is doing an incredible number of things, such as hosting a Eurovision village, marrying British culture and Ukrainian. But one thing they’re doing we especially loved was their  ambitious campaign to create the world’s biggest sing-along as an expression of solidarity with Ukraine during the Eurovision song contest.

The #HelpUkraineSong project is aiming to “unite the world through music” by getting as many people as possible to sing the Beatles’ With a Little Help from My Friends at noon on the day of the final.

Valerie Bounds, 47, who co-founded and runs a creative agency in Liverpool, thought of the idea while in London last year.

She said: “I came up with this idea while I was watching someone play the piano in Euston station at Christmas time, and thought ‘Wouldn’t it be wonderful to do an incredible moment in public spaces? I’m a big fan of Eurovision, I also volunteer with the Red Cross and [I] have worked with Ukrainian refugees, so it kind of all melded together.”

Money raised by #HelpUkraineSong will go to War Child, the only specialist charity for children affected by conflict.

So that’s it for the Eurovision ‘23  campaign wrap up! Who are you rooting for?
